| LAST YEAR’S DATA |

The data supplied by Anica in 2006 clearly portrays that private
Italian capital invested in cinema is €214 million of a total of €257 million.
The Italian Government has contributed a total of €43 million for feature films and
short films with cultural interest, ex art. 8 and OPS contribution, some of them deliberated
in the previous years, but realized during 2006.
As frequently mentioned, cinema is a hardly growing Italian branch of business, contrary
to other European countries, despite of rather positive results. This is due to the lack of
a strategic policy based on liberalization of different resources.
The real difficulty in Italy is distribution which happens to be managed by very few
companies: Medusa, Cecchi Gori group and Moviemax; or public companies: 01 Distribution,
100% controlled by RAI Cinema and Instituto Luce, or other independent distributors: BIM D.,
Eagle Pictures, Fandango, Filmauro, Lucky Red, Nexo to name a few.
Medium and small distributions are rarely able to support themselves and frequently disappear
from business. Therefore the most important foreign companies leave a distinct mark on our market
such as American Major, Buena Vista international, Sony Pictures releasing Italia, 20 th Century Fox,
Warner Bros and Pictures Italia.
These companies often exclude many excellent quality films. It is obvious that we have a cinematographic
market with a physiognomy focused on the exclusive income of few films concentrated on some specific
period of the year.
We are in absolute need of enterprises implementing new forms of distribution. The available financial
resources for cinema are highly insufficient. We work with the lowest resources at cost equity,
compared to other European countries. |
